Interchange 1 Vocabulary and Sample Sentences (Units 1-8)

The following words are taken from the Interchange 1 book by Jack Richards. They have meanings and sample sentences mostly patterned from the grammatical topics in each unit of the book. If you are familiar with this book, then you can easily recognize the pattern. There's a blank line after each sample sentence in order for the students to create their own sentences as well. 


Unit 1: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      average (adj.) – someone who is like everybody else / normal
Example: Mohammed is an average student.  His grades are not that high.

2.        creative (adj.) – a person who is good at thinking of new ideas and making interesting things
Example: My mother is very creative. She makes some unusual, but delicious cookies.

3.      athletic (adj.) – a person who is good at sports
Example:  Ahmed is an athletic person. He plays football, baseball, and basketball very well.

4.      nerdy (adj.) – someone who is smart , but doesn’t like to have friends.
Example: He is nice, but kind of nerdy.

5.      old -  fashioned (adj.) someone who is having old ideas
Example: My aunt is an old-fashioned woman.  She always wears traditional dresses.

6.      independent (adj.) – a person who is able to do things without help
Example:  Mustafa is an independent student. He works to pay his studies.

7.      adventurous (adj.) –  someone who likes to try new or difficult things
Example:  I am adventurous. I like extreme sports like sky diving and drifting.

8.      plain (adj.) -  someone who is not very good looking
Example: Jane is a plain woman, but she is very kind and friendly to everyone.

9.      boring (adj.) -  someone who is not interesting or exciting
Example: What are your friends like? They are good, but sometimes boring to be with.

10.  intelligent (adj.) – a person who is smart
Example: His friend, Ali, is highly intelligent young man. He always belongs to the top students in class.

Unit 2: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      salary (noun) – money from work
Example: Peter's salary is good enough to support his family.

2.      working conditions(noun) – the situation at work (hours/safety/vacation benefits)
Example: Workers deserve good working conditions.

3.      security(noun) –safety / protection
Example:  The president tightens the national security.

4.      dangerous(adj.) – not safe
Example: It is dangerous to get home late at night.

5.      experience (noun)-  the work a person did in the past 
Example:  She has no experience working in a bank, but she is smart and hardworking.

6.      quickly (adverb) – at a fast speed
Example:  They leave quickly to get to the party before noon.

7.      save (verb) – to keep for later
Example: I always save money for a rainy day.

8.      take care of  -  care for
Example:  Mrs. Williams only takes care of her child on weekends.

9.      allowance(noun) -  money parents give children to spend
Example: How does Ali spend his allowance? Not good! He always goes to the mall in the evening on weeknights.

10.   earn( verb) –to receive money as payment for work
Example: What do you do? I'm an engineer and I earn 5 thousand dollars a month.

Job Vocabulary
1. cashier (noun)      : a person whom costumers pay to or get money from
      Example:  What does Ali do? He is a cashier in a big supermarket.

2. chef (noun) : a person who cooks in a hotel or restaurant
      Example: What does a chef do? He / She cooks food in a hotel or restaurant.

3. doctor (noun) : a person who treats people who are ill or sick
     Example: Where does a doctor work? He / She works in a hospital.

4. flight attendant (noun): a person who works in an airplane and serves the passengers
     Example:  How does Sarah like her job? She loves being a flight attendant very much.

5. judge (noun) : a person who makes decisions in court
     Example: Mr. and Mrs. Petersons are in charge of a trial and make decisions in court. What do they do? They are judges.

6. lawyer (noun) : a person who gives advice to people about the law and speak for them in court:
     Example: What does a lawyer do exactly?  He / She gives advice to people about the law and speaks for them in court.

7. musician (noun) : a person who is skilled in playing music, usually as a job:
     Example: How do you like your job as a musician?  I really like it.

8. nurse (noun) : a person who helps the doctor  treat people who are sick or injured
     Example: What does Sarah do? She is a nurse in famous hospital.

9. pilot (noun) : a person who flies an airplane
       Example: Where does a pilot work? He / She works in an airline.

10. police officer (noun) : a person who makes sure that people obey the rules, prevents and  solves crime
      Example: How does Mahmood like his job as a police officer?  He doesn’t like it much.

11. receptionist (noun) : a person who talks and answers to people’s inquiries in hotels or offices
      Example: A receptionist works in a hotel or an office.

12. salesperson (noun): a person who sells things in a shop or directly to customers:
      Example: Hani is a salesperson in Jarrir Bookstore. He leaves work early in the morning every day.

13. security guard (noun)   : a person who watches the safety of valuable things and buildings
      Example: He always stays up late until dawn because he works as a security guard.

14. tour guide (noun) : a person who guides the tourists
      Example:  She is a tour guide in Malaysia, so she usually gets home late on weekends.

15. server /waiter / waitress (noun) : a person who brings food to customers at their tables in a restaurant
      Example:  Hassan works as a waiter in a restaurant. He always goes to bed around 12 midnight.

16. athlete (noun) : a person who is very good at sports or physical exercise
      Example: My friend is a competent athlete. He usually gets up to jog at 5 in the morning.

17. construction worker (noun) : a person who constructs or builds  houses and buildings
      Example: My father is a construction worker. He leaves work early on weekdays.

18. lumberjack  : a person whose job is to cut down trees in the forest
      Example:  He is a lumberjack, so he gets up early in the morning on weekdays.

19. manager (noun) : a person who manages  an organization or company :
      Example:  Mr. Johnson is a manager in ARAMCO.  He gets to work before 8 in the morning.

20. Web-site designer    :  a person who designs websites like Google, Yahoo, etc.
      Example: Mahmmod is a hard working web-site designer. He always stays up late until he finishes his work.

Unit 3: Vocabulary and Sample Sentences
1.      truthful(adj.) – honest and not containing or telling any lies
Example: My grandfather is a truthful man. He always reminds us the value of honesty.

2.      friendly(adj.) – behaving in a pleasant, kind way towards someone / nice to other people / sociable
Example: Many people like him because he is very friendly.

3.      pure(adj.) –very clean / free from harmful substance
Example:  I love mountain air. It is wonderfully pure.

4.      loving (adj.)- showing a lot of love towards  someone
Example: Sarah is such a loving child and everyone likes her.

5.      fun (adj.) enjoyable
Example: There are lots of fun things to do here.

6.      exciting(adj.) – making you feel excited
Example: The football match is more exciting than the baseball.

7.      mysterious (adj.)-  strange and difficult to understand
Example: John's friend is a bit mysterious. He doesn't tell about his family background.

8.      boring (adj.) – not interesting or exciting
Example: That color is boring. I like the red one better.

9.      jealous(adj.) – unhappy and angry because someone has something that you want
Example: He is very jealous of his brother’s new car.

10.   sad (adj.)-  not happy / unhappy
Example:  Mrs. Brown gives me a sad smile. His cat dies in a car accident.

11.  online(adverb) – bought, used, etc. using the internet

12.  marketplace( noun) –place to sell things / the business environment
Example: Nowadays, many people like to buy things in an online marketplace.

13.  bargain (noun)something on sale at a lower price than its true value
Example: This leather jacket is half-price –a real bargain.

14.  member (noun) – a person who joins a group to take part in a particular activity
Example: His sister-n-law is a new club member.

15.  trade (verb) – to buy and sell goods or services
Example: Many people like to trade online because it is more convenient.

16.  advertisement (noun) – a picture, short film, song, etc. that tries to persuade people to buy a product or service
Example: You can see a lot of commercial advertisement on TV.

17.  traditional (adj.)old-fashioned  / not new or modern
Example:  Traditional way to shop is better than online.

18.  in – line skates(noun)-  skate with a single row of wheels on the bottom
Example: Mohammed prefers to have in-line skates.

19.  flea market (noun) –market, usually taking place outside, where old or used goods are sold cheaply
Example: A lot of people buy things at a flea market to save money.

20.  reasonable (adj.) –not too expensive
Example: There are a lot of products in an online market which have reasonable prices.

Unit 4: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      rap(noun) – type of popular music with a strong rhythm in which the words are spoken, not sung
Example: Do you like rap music? Yes I do. I love it.

2.      R & B(noun) – rhythm and blues /  type of popular music, originally by African-American artists, that can have features of soul, jazz, funk, and hip-hop:
Example: My friend is a fan of R & B artists like Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey.

3.      country and western (noun) –popular music that is based on a type of traditional music from the western and southern US:
Example: What kind of music does he like? He likes country and western a lot.

4.      gospel (noun)- a kind of Christian religious music
Example: James is a Christian and he likes to hear Gospel music.

5.      jazz(noun) - a kind of dance music originally popular in the 1920s
Example: You can dance when you play jazz. It's amazing!

6.      classical music(adj.) –a form of music developed from a European tradition mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries: Example: Do you prefer classical music like Mozart and Mahler, or pop?

7.      pop(noun)-  modern popular music, usually with a strong beat, and easy to listen to and remember:
Example: What do you want to listen to- jazz, classical or pop?  I love pop very much.

8.      rock (noun) – type of popular music with a strongloud beat that is usually played with electric guitars and drums:
Example: I don't like rock because it is too loud.

9.      hit(noun) –a very popular / successful song

10.  single(noun) –record or CD that has only one main song on it:
Example: I'd love to listen to his new released single.

11.  fans (noun)people who admire and support a person, sport, sports team, etc.:
Example: Many fans would love to see and greet their idols.

12.  highlights (noun) – important events / the best or most exciting
Example: Would you like to watch the highlight of the concert?

13.  album(noun) – a collection of songs on a CD or cassette
Example: Many people buy the new album of a famous artist.

14.  perform(verb) –to entertain people by dancingsingingacting, or playing music:
Example: Would she like to perform on stage? She would love to, but she’s busy.

16.  roller-coaster ride (noun) – a very exciting time of life, usually with both happy and sad times

17.  soap opera (noun) - series of television programmes about the lives and problems of a particular group of characters
Example: My mother always watches soap operas on TV in the evening.

18.  thriller (noun) - film that has an exciting story, often about solving a crime:
Example:  What do you think of a thriller?  It's good, but I would love to watch comedy drama.

19.  science fiction ( noun) -   films, or cartoons about an imagined futureespecially about space travel or other planets:
Example: The movie Superman is a science fiction.

20.  horror film (noun)- film in which very frightening or unnatural things happen
Example: Would you like to watch horror film this weekend?  I would like to, but I have to work late.

Unit 5: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      family(noun) – a group of people related to each other  (a father / a mother / their children)
Example: I have a big family. There are 10 members in my family.

2.      family tree(noun) – drawing that shows the relationships between the different members of a family
Example: Ahmed is busy drawing his family tree.

3.      couple(noun) –two people who are married / having romantic relationship
Example: My father and mother are married couple.      ________________________________________________________________________________________
4.      get married (verb)- to begin a legal relationship with someone as their husband or wife:
Example:  When are you getting married?

5.      parents(noun) – refer to your mother and father
Example: Both of my parents are working in ARAMCO.

6.      grandparents(noun) –refer to  your grandfather and grandmother
Example: Our grandparents are visiting in the house on Saturday.

7.       great-grandparents(noun)- the parents of your grandparents
Example: My great-grandparents are already dead.

8.      nephew(noun) – a son of your sister or brother

Unit 6: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      softball(noun) – a sport similar to baseball but with a bigger, softer ball
Example: How often do you play softball? I play softball twice a week.

2.      weight training(noun) –lifting weights to become stronger
Example: Mohammed always goes to the gym for his weight training.

3.      treadmill(noun) –a machine for walking or running
Example: Mr. Junneil hardly ever uses treadmill when he goes to the health club.

4.      stretching (noun)- extending or making your arms and legs longer
Example: I usually do stretching as part of my exercise every day.

5.      nutrition(noun) – the food people eat and how it affects their health
Example: Good nutrition is very essential to your health.

6.      meal(noun) –breakfast , lunch, or dinner
Example:  How long do you spend online? I spend about an hour every after meal.

7.       junk food(noun)-  food that is not good for you / unhealthy

8.      average(adj.) –  medium / usual

Example: Her weight is beyond the ideal one.

10.  couch potato (noun) – a person who watches a lot of television and does not have an active life
Example: How often do you exercise? I never have time to exercise. I'm a couch potato!

Unit 7: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      leisure (noun) –the time when you are not working or doing other duties:
Example: Did you have much leisure time last summer? No, I didn't. I worked all day.

2.      downtown(noun) – in or to the center part of the city
Example: I went downtown and shopped for my birthday party.
________________________________________________________________________________________
3.      excellent(adj.) – extremely good
Example: Mr. and Mrs. Santini had an excellent vacation in the Philippines.

4.      amazing(adj.) – extremely surprising
Example: How was your vacation? That was fantastic. The beaches were amazing!

5.      incredible(adj.) –impossible, or very difficult, to believe:
Example: Something incredible happed during our trip to London.

6.       awful(adj.)-  extremely bad or unpleasant
Example: The weather was awful when we visited Chicago.

7.      terrible (adj.) – very unpleasant or serious or of low quality:
Example: It rained all day long. It was terrible!

8.      terrific  (adj.) –very good
Example: My trip to Australia was terrific! I saw a Kangaroo the first time.

9.      broke(adj.) –  without money
Example: I spent our holidays in the expensive resorts in Dubai. Now, I'm broke.

10.  luggage(noun) – bags or cases you take with you when you are travelling
Example: Unfortunately, he  lost his luggage in the airport.

Unit 8: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      amusement park(noun) –a place that has many games and rides for entertainment
Example: There is an amusement park on Main Street across from the gym.

2.      apartment building(noun) –  a large building that is divided into apartments
Example: Are there many apartment buildings on Pine Street?

3.      avenue(noun) –  wide street /wide road with trees or tall buildings on both sides
Example: There aren't many apartment buildings on 3rd Avenue.

4.      Laundromat(noun) –a place that has machines for washing and drying clothes
Example: Is there a Laundromat around town? Yes, there is. There's one next to the hotel.  ________________________________________________________________________________________
5.      museum(noun) –building where objects of historicalscientific, or artistic interest are kept:
Example: There is a museum on 4th Avenue in front of the gas station.

6.       corner(noun)- the place where two streets or roads meet 
Example: The hotel is on the corner of 1st Avenue and Main Street.

7.      street  (noun) –  road in a city or town that has houses or other buildings on one or both sides :
Example: Are there many streets in your city? No, there aren't many.

8.      public transportation(noun) –refer to public vehicles such busses, taxi, trains, etc.
Example: Is there much public transportation in town? Yes, there's a lot.

9.      pollution(noun) – damage caused to waterairetc. by harmful substances or waste:
Example: There isn't much pollution in the country.

10.  traffic(noun) –the number of vehicles moving along roads
Example: How much traffic is there in the city? There's a lot of traffic.
