Interchange Intro Vocabulary and Sample Sentences (Units 1-8)

The following words are taken from the Interchange Intro book by Jack Richards. They have meanings and sample sentences mostly patterned from the grammatical topics in each unit of the book. If you are familiar with this book, then you can easily recognize the pattern. There's a blank line after each sample sentence in order for the students to create their own sentences as well. 


Unit 1: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      given name  (noun) - first name
Example: My given name is Mohammed.

2.      middle name (noun) – the name  between your  first name and your last name father's name (Middle East)
Example: My middle name is Abdullah.

3.      surname(noun) –last name / family name
Example:  My surname is Al-Safwani.

4.      nickname(noun) - a short name used to call you by your family and friends
Example: My nickname is Hamoodi. / I have no nickname at all.

5.      male– (adjective)  a man / a boy
Example: Mustafa is a male, and he's handsome.

6.      female (adjective.) – a woman / a girl
Example:  Sarah is female, and she's pretty.

7.      popular (adjective.) – famous
Example: Mohammad is a popular name  in Saudi Arabia.

8.      Mr. (mis-ter)(noun.) -  a single or married man
Example: Is Mr. Junneil your teacher? Yes, he is.

9.      Ms. (miz)(noun.) - a single or married woman
Example: Are you Ms. Brown? No, I'm not. I'm Ms. Black.

10.  Mrs.(noun)(noun) –  a married woman
Example:  Your teacher in Math is Mrs. Woods. She's really good.

11.  Miss (mis) (noun) – a single woman
Example:  Her teacher's name is Miss Williams.

Unit 2: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      encyclopedia (noun) - a book or set of books containing many articles arranged from A-Z
Example: Where's your encyclopedia? It's in the bookshelf.

2.      wastebasket  (noun) – a small container where you put trash or garbage
Example: This is a wastebasket.  These are wastebaskets.

3.      wallet (noun) -  a small folding case for carrying money, credit cards, etc.
Example:  Is this your wallet? No, it's not. It’s hers.

4.      stamp(noun) - a small piece of paper with a picture or pattern on it (for mail)
Example: Where are the stamps? They’re on the mail envelope.

5.      pocket (noun) – a small part of pants or a shirt where people put their wallet or money in
Example: Ahmed's wallet is in his pocket.

6.      ticket (noun) - a piece of paper that allows you to see a show or enter a place or a plane
Example: It's my movie ticket / They're my movie tickets.

7.      cool (adjective.) – very good / excellent
Example: What's this? It's a watch. That's cool! I love it.

8.      interesting(adjective) -  not dull or boring / keeps your attention
Example: The final football match is very interesting. / My friends are all interesting.

9.      relax(verb) = don’t' worry - to calm down / become less tense
Example: Relax Ahmed, everything will be okay.

10.  I bet = I think
Example: I bet you will easily pass the test. You are very smart.

Unit 3: Vocabulary and sample sentences
1.      population(noun) -  the number of people who live in a place or area.
Example: What's the population in your country? It's more than 30 million.

2.      metropolitan (noun) - a large city in a country and sometimes including its suburbs
Example: Riyadh is the metropolitan of Saudi Arabia.

3.      originally (adverb) -  first  / in the beginning
Example:  She's originally from France. She speaks French very well.
________________________________________________________________________________________
4.      nationality(noun) –being a member or citizen  of a particular nation
Example: Are you a Saudi? No, I'm not. My nationality is Korean.

5.      cute (adjective)– pleasant and attractive
Example: The three little kittens are so cute.
________________________________________________________________________________________
6.      personality(noun) –the type of person you are: the way you behave, feel and think
Example: What's he like? He's a very nice person. He has good personality.

7.      good looking (adjective.) – having a pleasant and attractive appearance: handsome / pretty
Example: Are your brothers and sisters good-looking?

8.      appearance (noun) -  the way that someone looks
Example: Your appearance is like a model on TV. You are very pretty.

9.      shy(adjective) - nervous and uncomfortable with other people: (doesn’t talk much to anyone)
Example: Is Abdullah shy? No, he is not. He is very friendly.

10.  talkative (adjective)- a person who talks most of the time
Example: Sarah is the most talkative in class.  ________________________________________________________________________________________

UNIT 4:  Vocabulary and sample sentences
    
 1. leisure (noun) - : (free time) the time when you are not working or studying
          Example: What do you usually do in your leisure time? I usually play football with my friends.

2. dry (noun) : not wet
          Example: Are my pants dry now? No, they’re not.
________________________________________________________________________________________
3. disaster (noun) : a very bad event the results to great harm, damage or death
          Example: There’s a train accident right in the city. It’s a great disaster!

4. season (noun) : a period of the year like summer, fall, spring, and winter
          Example: What is your favorite season of the year?
________________________________________________________________________________________
5. winter (noun): It’s snowing and very cold. The season of the year between autumn and spring
          Example: Winter is my favorite season of the year. I love to ski.
________________________________________________________________________________________
6. spring (noun) : It’s warm and sunny. The season of the year between winter and summer.
          Example: Look! The plants are growing. It’s spring time!

7. summer (noun) : It’s hot and in some places humid. The season of the year between spring   and autumn when the weather is warmest
        Example: Are they wearing sunglasses? Yes, they are. It’s summer and it’s very hot!

8. fall / autumn (noun) : It’s windy most of the time. The season of the year between summer and winter
        Example: The leaves are falling from the trees. It’s autumn now!

UNIT 5: Vocabulary and sample sentences

1. conference (noun) : a large meeting, especially at work
       Example: What are they doing? They are having a conference in the office.

2. awake (adjective) : not sleeping
      Example: Is Mustafa awake yet? Yes, he is. He is taking a shower right now.
________________________________________________________________________________________
3. chat (verb) to talk to someone in a friendly informal way; especially on the internet
      Example: What are Sarah and Mary doing?  They are chatting with their friends.
________________________________________________________________________________________
4. online (adjective)            : using the internet
      Example:  Are you online at night?  Yes, I am. I always check my emails and chat with friends.

5. Internet café (noun): a café where you can pay to use the internet
      Example: Where is Ali? He is working on his homework at the Internet café’.

UNIT 6:  Vocabulary and sample sentences

1. transportation (noun): a vehicle or system of vehicles, such as buses, trains, etc. for getting from one place to another:
      Example: Bicycles are a cheap and a better form/ways of transportation.

2. downtown (noun)            : the business center of a city / the central part of the city
      Example:  Ali takes a taxi to work every day. He doesn’t live downtown.

3. suburb (noun): outside area of a city where many people often live
      Example: My family lives in the suburb. I go downtown by car.
________________________________________________________________________________________
4. retired (adjective): not working, especially because of age
      Example: Does your father work? No, he doesn’t work anymore. He is a retired doctor.

5. serve (verb): to help or to give food in a restaurant
       Example: Peter works as waiter downtown. He serves food at the restaurant.

6. routine (noun) : something being done every day
       Example:  My friend’s daily routine includes riding a bike near his home.
________________________________________________________________________________________
7. break (noun) : a short period of rest, when food or drink is sometimes eaten:
       Example:  When do you have a break? I have a short break in the afternoon.

8. project (noun) : a study of a particular subject done over a period of time, especially by students:
       Example: They don’t have enough time to finish their science project.
________________________________________________________________________________________
9. early bird (noun): a person who gets up or arrives early
       Example: What time do you usually get up? I always get up at 5 AM. I’m an early bird!

10. night owl (noun) : a person who prefers to be awake and active at night
       Example: Does he work at night?  Yes, he works until 12 midnight. He’s a night owl!

UNIT 7:  Vocabulary and sample sentences

1.  stairs (noun): a set of steps that lead from one level to another, esp. in a building:
       Example: There aren’t any stairs in the building. You have to use the elevator.

2. laundry room (noun): a room in the house for washing clothes
       Example: Does the house have a laundry room? No, it doesn’t.
________________________________________________________________________________________
3. apartment / flat (noun): a set of rooms for living in, especially on one floor of a building:
       Example: Does your teacher live in a house? No, doesn’t. He lives in an apartment.
________________________________________________________________________________________
4. elevator (noun) : a machine like a box that moves up and down, carrying people or goods from one floor of a building to another
       Example:  There are two elevators in the apartment building where I live.

5. lobby (noun): a waiting area / an entrance hall
       Example: There’s a huge lobby in the hotel. People are staying there before the conference.

6. view (noun) : what you can see from a particular place; scenery
       Example:  Does her bedroom have the view of the see?  Yes, it does.

7. furniture (noun): things such as chairs, tables, beds, cupboards, etc. that are put into a house or other building
       Example:  There is no furniture in the kitchen.

8. cabin (noun) : a small, simple house made of wood
      Example: There are some beautiful cabins in the forest.

9. villa (noun)            :  a house of a wealthy person , usually in the countryside or near the sea
     Example: There aren’t any villas in our neighborhood.

10 . penthouse (noun) : an expensive apartment or set of rooms at the top of a hotel or tall building:
     Example: Does the penthouse have glass windows and walls? Yes, it does.

UNIT 8:  Vocabulary and sample sentences

1. cashier (noun)      : a person whom costumers pay to or get money from
      Example:  What does Ali do? He is a  cashier in a big supermarket.

2. chef (noun) : a person who cooks in a hotel or restaurant
      Example: What does a chef do? He / She cooks food in a hotel or restaurant.

3. doctor (noun) : a person who treats people who are ill or sick
     Example: Where does a doctor work? He / She works in a hospital.
________________________________________________________________________________________
4. flight attendant (noun): a person who works in an airplane and serves the passengers
     Example:  How does Sarah like her job? She loves being a flight attendant very much.
________________________________________________________________________________________
5. judge (noun) : a person who makes decisions in court
     Example: Mr. and Mrs. Petersons are in charge of a trial and make decisions in court. What do they do? They are judges.

6. lawyer (noun) : a person who gives advice to people about the law and speak for them in court:
     Example: What does a lawyer do exactly?  He / She gives advice to people about the law and speaks for them in court.

7. musician (noun) : a person who is skilled in playing music, usually as a job:
     Example: How do you like your job as a musician?  I really like it.

8. nurse (noun) : a person who helps the doctor  treat people who are sick or injured
     Example: What does Sarah do? She is a nurse in famous hospital.

9. pilot (noun) : a person who flies an airplane
       Example: Where does a pilot work? He / She works in an airline.
________________________________________________________________________________________
10. police officer (noun) : a person who makes sure that people obey the rules, prevents and  solves crime
      Example: How does Mahmood like his job as a police officer?  He doesn’t like it much.

11. receptionist (noun) : a person who talks and answers to people’s inquiries in hotels or            offices
      Example: A receptionist’s job is not too stressful.

12. salesperson (noun): a person who sells things in a shop or directly to customers:
      Example: A salesperson has an easy job.
________________________________________________________________________________________
13. security guard (noun)   : a person who watches the safety of valuable things and buildings
      Example: A security guard’s job is quite dangerous.

14. singer (noun) : a person who sings
      Example:  My friend is a famous singer. He has an exciting job.

15. waiter / waitress            (noun) : a person who brings food to customers at their tables in a restaurant
      Example:  Hassan works as a waiter  in a restaurant. His job is quite boring.

16. athlete (noun) : a person who is very good at sports or physical exercise
      Example: Athletes have a relaxing job.

17. carpenter            (noun) : a person who builds houses and makes furniture
      Example: My father is a carpenter. He has a difficult job.

18. janitor (noun): a person who takes care of a large building and  deals with the cleaning, repairs, etc.
      Example:  A janitor’s job is not easy.

19. manager (noun) : a person who manages  an organization or company :
      Example:  Mr. Johnson is a manager in ARAMCO.  He has a wonderful job.

20. secretary  (noun):  a person who works in an office, writes letters, makes phone calls, and arranges  meetings for a person or for an organization:
      Example: She wants to be a secretary in a big company.  She thinks a secretary’s job is interesting.
